GATE exam pattern consists of the following type of questions:
- Multiple choice questions
- Common data questions - A particular data is provided to the candidate and two questions relating to that data are asked
- Linked answer questions, where the answer to the second question highly depends on the answer to the first. There is NO Negative marking for the second question. The Catch is, the second answer will be evaluated ONLY IF the first is correct..i.e.. Wrong first answer and correct second answer would mean Negative marks on the whole. (In the actual GATE exam, a lot of students attempt the first question without being sure so that they can answer the "No Negative marks" question and end up getting negative marks. We discourage the candidates from doing so.Attempt only if you re 100% confident of the first question)
- Numerical answer questions- The answer to the question is a WHOLE NUMBER and appropriate bubbles have to be shaded. ( NO NEGATIVE MARKING )
Except Numerical answer questions and second questions in the linked answer sets, All questions in the GATE exam papers have 1/3 negative marks for 1 mark questions and 2/3 negative marks for 2 mark questions. (One third of the questions value)
On whole, the GATE question paper consists of 65 questions carrying 100 marks, including the 10 General Aptitude questions for 15 marks.
